2015 Australian Championships

28th December 2014 - 3rd January 2015

Lauderdale Sailing Club,Tas

2015 Paper Tiger Catamaran National Championships - Victorian Bryan Anderson has broken his own record for National titles, to notch up an incredible eighth win in the 2015 Australian Paper Tiger Championships, which concluded in Lauderdale TAS on Friday. However, it was undoubtedly one of the hardest fought, and was only decided on the last windward beat, of the final race.

Light and shifty conditions dominated the final two days of racing, with the lightweight skippers of the fleet revelling in the flat seas. Race nine saw local sailor Rob Cracknel (Mac Attack) finally turn his light weather speed into a dominating win. Race 10 delivered Luke Stout (Goin’ Wild) his second victory of the series, after fighting off the early challengers.

The final day of racing had the top three overall separated by just four points, and the overcast and light conditions would ensure a tense conclusion to the series. A late wind shift just before the start of Race Eleven, saw a log jam of boats unable to lay the pin end of the line, but Bruce Rose (The Apprentice) was able to avoid the carnage and sail to a much needed win. With series leader Bryan Anderson in third, and second place overall Mark Wiggins (Firestorm) having a tough race, it became a race in two for the title.

As the two contenders went blow for blow in the five - seven knot SE breeze of Race 12, it was Jason Dunsmore (Unknown Zone) who slipped through for his maiden nationals race win. Moments later Bryan Anderson, who held off a late challenge from Bruce Rose just 100m from the line, crossed in sixth place and sealed his eighth national crown.

A huge thanks must go to the Lauderdale Yacht Club volunteers on and off the water, and the Tas Paper Tiger Catamaran Association, who gave so much time and effort before and during the series to make it such a success.

Attention now turns to the International Series at Kurnell Catamaran Club in NSW at Easter, where the top ten from this regatta, plus selected invitees, will do battle with the best New Zealand Paper Tiger talent, from across the ditch.

2014 Australian Championships

28th December 2013 - 3rd January 2014

Portarlington Sailing Club, Vic

See VPTCA website: http://www.vicpapertiger.org.au/

Victoria's Bryan Anderson has secured his seventh Paper Tiger Catamaran Australian Championship. The event, hosted by Portarlington Sailing Club on Victoria's Bellarine Peninsula, attracted a competitive fleet of 27 boats, with entrants from Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and South Australia.

Mark Wiggins from Victoria had a great start to the series, taking two race wins on the first day and another win on the second day to establish an early lead with Anderson a close second. Races 5 and 6 saw Anderson take two wins to then clinch the overall lead going into the final day.

After several postponements while waiting for the wind to settle in, the final two races got underway in a 15-20 knot southerly and flat water, which made for fast and exiting Paper Tiger racing. Anderson won the final race to clinch the series with Wiggins a close second. Defending Champion, Tasmania's Bruce Rose finished third overall.

This year's event saw the introduction of coloured rash tops for division leaders, a la Tour de France. These were presented to the A (Overall), B and C grade leaders at the pre-race briefing each day to be worn during racing and added an extra element of interest to the competition. As the overall winner, Anderson won the yellow jersey, with Sean Keady and Steve Price taking out the blue and orange jerseys for B and C grade respectively.

The women's division was won by Jani Marcovitch from NSW with Sarah Ashley-Jones of Victoria runner up.

Next year's event is to be held at Lauderdale Yacht Club in Tasmania. With a growing fleet of 20 boats already sailing at the club, the 2015 Nationals are likely to see a fleet of 45+ boats. With the great sailing and hospitality in Tassie it will be an event not to be missed!

The event will also form the selection for the Paper Tiger Internationals to be held in Australia over Easter 2015.

The class is also seeing resurgence around Port Phillip Bay with growing fleets sailing at McCrae, Mt Martha and Somers Yacht Clubs.

2012 Australian Championships

3rd-8th January 2012

Mannering Park Amateur Sailing Club, NSW

See event website: http://austnats2012.papertigercatamaran.org/

A highly competitive fleet that included numerous current and former Australian and International Champions, competed in the 42nd Paper Tiger Catamaran Nationals, held at Mannering Park ASC on Lake Macquarie, NSW. Boats from five states plus the ACT competed, providing a truly national competition.

This year's event was held over a compact six days, reduced from nine days for previous Nationals. This proved popular with the competitors and is likely to continue into the future. The major sponsor for the series was Sydway Street Directories. The other event sponsors were Redhead Sails, Swansea RSL Club, Blue Water Function Centre and Pretty Swish.

Local skipper, Ian Marcovitch, the current International Champion, started the series well with a win but struggled in the next two races. Former champions, Bryan Anderson and Greg Williams, took the next two races. It was in the fourth race that former International and National Champion, Garry Williams, began to assert his dominance. Garry won four of the next five races, wrapping up the series with a race to spare. Garry had prepared well for the event, embarking on a weight-loss program that saw him looking much leaner than in previous years. He was also coming off the back of winning his 21st NSW State Title in the class, an amazing achievement! He showed particular skills in the lighter and shiftier conditions, yet also won the heaviest race of the series after his son Greg lost a side stay shackle while leading. Garry had previously won the Nationals in 1984, 1985 and 1988, so it was a long time between drinks for this popular "class legend".

Three boats could have finished second going into the last race, but the eventual runner up was Bryan Anderson, securing that place with a win. Third overall was Greg Williams.

2010 Australian Championships

29th December 2009 - 5th January 2010

Henley Sailing Club, South Australia

Congratulations to Victorian Bryan Anderson (Fly'n Bry'n) on his victory in the Nationals at Henley Sailing Club, SA. It seems likely that his record of six national titles will stand for a very long time. However it was no pushover, and the standard of sailing in the fleet was very high. Greg Williams (Shadow Boxing) was a close second overall and as in previous recent Nationals it came down to the last race to decide the title. Third place went to Ian Marcovitch (Mojo), edging out Peter Anderson (Just in Time). The big improvers at the top end were Luke Stout (Speed Demon) 5th and Alex Craig (Need for Speed) 8th.

Weather conditions were excellent for the whole series, if a bit hot at times, and a full range of wind conditions (light, moderate, heavy) enabled the invitation race and all nine heats to be completed. Click here for report.
